Islanders Down Rebels, 3-1

Feb. 24, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team dropped its opening game at the 2012 Kleberg Bank College Classic, falling to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1 here tonight at Whataburger Field.

Joe Robinson (0-1) was charged with the loss despite a solid six-inning effort. Robinson scattered three hits and struck out three, allowing two runs, one of which was earned.

The Islanders (5-1) got on the board in the bottom of the first after Bobby Buckner roped a two-out triple down the right-field line and scored one batter later on Kyle Danford’s RBI single up the middle.

Texas A&M-C.C starter Adam Hoelscher (2-0) kept the Rebels in check, allowing just one hit over the first five innings.

UNLV broke through in the sixth, tying the game at 1-1 on a Scott Tomassetti groundout that scored Trent Cook.

The lead would be short lived however as the Islanders scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half on Danford’s second RBI single of the night and tacked on one in the eighth to cap a 3-1 win.

UNLV will be back in action tomorrow, squaring off against Utah. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m. PT from Whataburger Field.
