Rebels Down Wolf Pack, 5-4
March 2, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team opened up its three-game series against rival Nevada, Reno with a 5-4 win here tonight at Wilson Stadium.
Danny Higa was 2-for-3 from the plate to lead the Rebel offense, while Brandon Bayardi finished 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases. Joe Robinson evened his record at 1-1, throwing 6.0 innings, scattering six hits while striking out six along the way.
Despite solo home runs in the second by Austin Byler and fourth by Brooks Klein, the Wolf Pack (5-4) could not escape a Rebel answer in the bottom half of each inning.
UNLV (6-4) tied the game in the second after Bayardi tripled down the right-field line and scored two batters later on a T.J. White groundout to second. Bayardi came up big again in the fourth, reaching first after being hit by a Brandon Shipley pitch and stealing both second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to make a 2-2 game.
Back-to-back singles by Higa and Trevor Kirk in the UNLV fifth set the Rebels up to take the lead. A Shipley throwing error following a Scott Dysinger single to right allowed Higa to score and runners to advance to second and third with one out. Trent Cook’s double down the right field line scored both runners to cap a three-run fifth for UNLV, giving the Rebels a 5-2 lead.
An RBI double by Jamison Rowe and a RBI sacrifice fly from Klein in the top of the eighth made it a one-run game. Zack
Hartman was able to close out the eighth, striking Joe Kohan and getting Carlos Escobar Jr. to foul out behind the plate. Hartman came back in the ninth, striking out two to earn his second save in as many chances.
The Rebels will continue action against the Wolf Pack tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
