Wolf Pack Hold On for 3-2 Win

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – A late-inning comeback attempt was held in check by Nevada, Reno closer Matt Gardner as UNR was able to even the series at one game apiece following a 3-2 win today here at Wilson Stadium.
Mark Shannon (0-2) took the loss for UNLV after giving up a two-run homer in the eighth that put UNR ahead 3-1. Starter Zak Qualls threw 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and giving up one run while striking out two to mark his third straight quality start in the no decision.
UNLV (6-5) took an early 1-0 lead in the first after Trevor Kirk singled to start the inning and scored three batters later on an RBI single to center field by Brandon Bayardi. Kirk finished the day with a pair of hits and runs scored for the Rebels.
The Wolf Pack (6-4) tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth on a Jay Anderson RBI single that scored Garrett Yrigoyen.
UNR then took a two-run lead following Brooks Klein’s two-run homer to right, marking the third roundtripper for the Wolf Pack in two games.
The Rebels pulled within one in the bottom half of the eighth after Kirk scored from third on a Trent Cook fielder’s choice. UNR turned to Gardner with two outs after Troy Marks had walked T.J. White to put runners on first and second. Gardner got Danny Higa looking for the final out of the eighth and threw a three-up, three-down ninth for his fourth save of the season.
The two teams will be back in action for tomorrow’s rubber match. First pitch is slated fro 1:05 p.m. in the series finale from Wilson Stadium.
