BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team was edged out 4-3 by Cal on Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond to hand the ’Dogs their third loss to the Bears in three days.

Kevin Viers’ bat and Aaron Judge’s defense highlighted the ’Dogs outing on Saturday, which kept the Bears within striking distance throughout the game.

Viers, the freshman from Yorba Linda, took Cal pitcher Ryan Wartenberger yard for a three-run blast to give the ‘Dogs a 3-1 advantage in the fifth inning. The blast was Viers’ first career home run and upped his RBI total to five for the series against Cal.

Viers owns 5-of-8 of Fresno State’s RBIs in its series against the Bears.

Judge kept the Cal at bay defensively, the preseason All-American shined in the outfield with three remarkable plays of note. The Bears, with a 1-0 lead in the fourth and one runner aboard, struck a ball soundly to center field that had the distance only to be robbed as Judge leapt over wall to make the catch, saving two runs from scoring.

In the seventh, the Bears made a push to put the game away. With the bases loaded and one out, Judge hurled a pop fly from center field to Austin Wynns at home plate. Wynns blocked the plate and made the tag to convert a spectacular double play.

The following inning, the 6’7” speedster got underneath a fly ball to short center field to end a threatening inning once again.

The ‘Dogs were unable to capitalize in the latter inning offensively as they did not have a runner in scoring position following their fifth inning outburst.

Freshman Tim Borst got the starting nod for the fourth time this season. Borst allowed a lead-off home run by Devin Pearson, but settled in until he got into trouble in the fifth. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.

Tyler Linehan was charged with the loss as he pitched 3.0 innings and surrendered the go ahead run in the seventh inning. Linehan allowed one run on three hits.

The series finale between Fresno State and Cal takes place at 1 p.m. on Sunday from Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.
