Rebels Rout T-Birds, 22-12

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team scored 14 runs in the first two innings to cruise past the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 22-12 tonight.
Every starter in the UNLV (10-7) lineup recorded at least one hit on the night and nine had at least one RBI. John Richy (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, going 5.1 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing four runs with one strikeout.
Southern Utah (2-13) took a 6-0 lead, batting around the order in the first, before the UNLV batters saw the plate. The Rebels responded in the bottom half of the inning with eight runs of their own, taking an 8-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Marvin Campbell kick started the Rebel scoring in the first, blasting a grand slam to right-center field. Campbell finished the night 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
The UNLV offense continued the onslaught, batting around the order for the second time in as many innings and platting six more in the bottom half of the second inning to take a commanding 14-8 lead.
The Rebels scored at least one run in all but two innings en route to putting up their first 20-plus run effort since May 1, 2010 against Air Force. The game also marked the fourth occurrence UNLV has scored at least 20 runs against Southern Utah and first since April 17, 1993.
UNLV will be back in action, kicking off the Mountain West schedule with TCU. First pitch Friday night is set for 6:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
