Sun Devils Clip Rebels, 4-2

TEMPE (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team suffered its first midweek loss of the 2012 season, falling to the 14th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils by a 4-2 score here at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. tonight.
The Rebels (10-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. Mark Shannon’s third home run of the year, a towering show to right off ASU starter Zak Miller game UNLV a 1-0 lead after the first.
Marvin Campbell walked and made his way to third on a Scott Tomassetti single and Danny Higa sacrifice bunt. Campbell then made his way home on a T.J. White RBI groundout, extending the lead to 2-0 in favor of UNLV.
Arizona State (13-7) answered in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-2 lead. Kasey Coffman singled up the middle and scored one batter later on Beau Maggi’s single to center. Following a Michael Benjamin base hit up the middle, leadoff man Andrew Alpin sent a 1-0 Buddy Borden offering barley over the wall in the corner of right field.
Borden fell to 0-2 on the year despite striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Jessie Garcia took over for Borden in the sixth, throwing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball while striking out three on 26 pitches.
The Rebels were limited to just three hits on the night in their fourth straight loss.
UNLV will remain on the road, traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo. this weekend for a three-game series with Air Force. First pitch between the Rebels and Falcons is set for 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
