April 3, 2012
CEDAR CITY, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team completed its season sweep with Southern Utah University, taking the final game in series history by a 21-6 count at Thunderbird Park.
The Rebels (14-15, 2-7 Mountain West) tallied 23 hits en route to their second straight victory. Trevor Kirk, Brandon Bayardi and Trent Cook all had at least four hits on the day. In addition to his second home run in as many games, Kirk’s five runs scored and five hits marked career-high numbers.
Mark Shannon (2-2) evened his record, scattering seven hits over 5.1 innings and striking out seven while walking just one in his first start for the Rebels. Jessie Garcia worked 1.2 innings while John Richy and Tyler Iodence each pitched one inning and recorded one strikeout.
UNLV jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings and put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth and a four-run sixth, extending its lead to 14-3. In the sixth, UNLV accomplished a rare feat as Kirk, Cook and Casey Sato hit back-to-back-to-back home runs.
Sato finished the day with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI in his second start at second base this year.
The Rebels and Thunderbirds played the final contest in a series that dates back to the 1967 season as SUU announced prior to the season that they would be dropping baseball. UNLV closes the series with an all-time record of 97-18-1.
UNLV will be back in action, kicking off a seven-game homestand with a three-game series against rival San Diego State on Thursday, April 5. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. from Wilson Stadium.
