Aztecs Win 6-3 In 11 Innings

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team played in its first extra-innings game of the season, falling to San Diego State by a 6-3 score here Friday night at Wilson Stadium.

San Diego State (16-16, 5-3 Mountain West) matched their game output of three runs in the top of the 11th to break a 3-3 tie. Aztec closer Justin Hepner gave up a leadoff hit in the bottom of the 11th, but was able to get Joey Swanner to ground into a 4-3 double play to end the game and clinch the series.

Mark Shannon (2-3) takes the loss for UNLV after giving up two hits and three runs in 2.0 innings on the hill.

Trent Cook led the UNLV second off with a double to left, advanced to third on T.J. White’s groundout to first and scored on a Danny Higa RBI groundout to second.

SDSU took its first lead of the night after scoring a pair in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Greg Allen and an infield RBI single from Tim Zier.

UNLV answered in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases for Higa, who drew an RBI walk, scoring Brandon Bayardi and tying the game at 2-2. Aztec starter Travis Pitcher continued to struggle around the plate, walking in Cook to give UNLV a 3-2 lead before settling down and striking out Scott Tomassetti to end the sixth.

The Aztecs tied it up at 3-3 in the seventh after Matt Munoz walked, stole second and scored on Allen’s single to right field.

Zack Hartman took over in relief of Brady Zuniga and struck out Tim Zier and Chris Wilson to get out of the inning. Hartman worked 2.2 innings of relief, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out five.

The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with an afternoon matinee scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. from Wilson Stadium.
