Rebels Fall 9-5 In Series Finale

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team could not hold off the San Diego State offense today, giving up 18 hits in a 9-5 series finale loss at Wilson Stadium.
SDSU (17-16, 6-3 Mountain West) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings, roughing up Rebel starter Erick Fedde (2-3) on eight hits. Fedde yielded 11 hits in 6.0 innings of work on the day, giving up five runs (four earned) while striking out three and walking two.
UNLV (14-18, 2-10 Mountain West) got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on a Brandon Bayardi sacrifice fly and a Trevor Kirk RBI double down the left-field line.
SDSU tacked on one in the seventh and three more in the eighth to go ahead 9-2.
The Rebels offense rallied for three runs in the eighth, with doubles from Mark Shannon, Trent Cook and Kirk. Danny Higa’s RBI single score Kirk but Justin Hepner was able to come in and strike out Tyler Blair to end the threat.
Hepner worked 1.1 innings in relief, earning his sixth save of the year and second in as many days, striking out two while not allowing a hit.
UNLV will be back in action next Friday, hosting Nebraska-Omaha in a four-game series. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. from Wilson Stadium.
