April 7, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball (22-9, 7-5 Mountain West) lost the series finale 5-3 to Fresno State (8-20, 3-7 MW) on Sunday.
The Rebels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Fresno State took a 2-1 lead when Austin Wynns hit a two run homer in the fourth.
UNLV tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Bulldogs recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the inning, and would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Rebels would threaten the Bulldog's lead, as they had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, but Fresno State forced UNLV into a foul pop out, strikeout and line out to end the threat.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs when Kevin Viers hit a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman Kenny Oakley (3-2) took the loss after pitching 7.2 innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits while striking out three. Brayden Torres came in for relief and only faced one batter in the bottom of the eighth.
UNLV will return home to host Arizona State on Wednesday and will resume Mountain West play Friday through Sunday as the Rebels host instate rival Nevada, Reno.
