LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team clinched its second series win of the year, pounding out 22 hits in a 20-1 win over visiting Nebraska-Omaha here this afternoon at Wilson Stadium.
Buddy Borden (1-3) earned his first win of the season after scattering five hits over 6.0 innings of work, giving up one run while striking out four.
Trevor Kirk and Mark Shannon opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles, giving the UNLV (17-19, 2-10 Mountain West) a 1-0 lead. RBI singles from Trent Cook and T.J. White made it 3-0 before a sacrifice fly from Craig Shul capped the opening inning at 4-0 in favor of the home team.
After a scoreless second and third, Shul doubled to kick off the Rebel fourth and scored one batter later on a Joey Swanner triple to right field. Kirk’s sacrifice fly to right scored Swanner while Brandon Bayardi singled in Shannon as UNLV put up three to push the lead to 7-1.
The Rebels put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring seven runs on four hits. Bayardi’s two-run double to left center was followed by a three-run homer from White, marking his second home run of the season.
A two-out, two-run double from Cole Wilstead highlighted a three-run Rebel sixth and extended the lead to 17-1 while Kirk added his third homer of the year, a two-run shot in the seventh to make it a 19-1 game.
Scott Dysinger, Tyler Iodence and Zack Hartman each threw an inning of relief, allowing just two hits and one walk in that span.
The Rebels will be back in action this coming week, traveling to UC Riverside for a two-game midweek set. First pitch Tuesday night is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Riverside, California.
