Rebels Fall 3-1 To Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, California (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team suffered just their second defeat in a midweek game this year, falling 3-1 to UC Riverside at the Riverside Sports Complex tonight.

Despite outhitting the Highlanders by a 12-8 count, the Rebels (17-20) advanced just three runners to third base on the night.

John Richy (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year after going 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out one and walking two. Richy retired the first seven batters of the game before giving up a single through the left side in the third.

The Highlanders (11-18) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Davidson scored from third on a Eddie Young single through the right side.

Cody Hough singled to start the Riverside seventh and made his way to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bart Steponovich. A single from Nick Vilter pushed Hough to third before he made his way home on an Eddie Young single through the right side.

UNLV finally got on the board in the top of the eighth, cutting the deficit to 2-1 when Trent Cook scored from second on an RBI single up the middle from T.J. White. Cook doubled to the gap in left center to get on.

The Highlanders added one in the bottom of the eighth to make it 3-1 while Ben Doucette retired the Rebel side in the ninth in order, including a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. from the Riverside Sports Complex.
