Highlanders Down Rebels, 13-5
April 18, 2012
RIVERSIDE, California (UNLVRebels.com) – The UC Riverside baseball team scored early and often, registering its sixth straight win over UNLV following a 13-5 win here this afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.
UC Riverside (12-18) took control early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one, extending it to 7-0 through two innings and 10-0 after four complete.
David Andriese found the gap in right-center field for a bases-clearing triple before scoring one batter later on Clayotn Prestridge’s sacrifice fly to left.
Andriese delivered again for the Highlanders in the second, jacking a three-run homer over the right-field wall.
After an Eddie Young sacrifice fly in the third brought in Drake Zarate, Riverside took advantage of a Danniy Higa fielding error to the tune of two runs in the fourth. Bart Steponovich’s bases-loaded pop up to short was dropped, allowing a pair of runs to cross the plate.
Brandon Bayardi hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year in the top of the fourth to get UNVL on the board while Danny Higa notched his second longball of the year in the fifth, a towering shot that cleared the raised netting over the wall in left field, bringing the score to 10-3.
The Rebels (17-21, 2-10 Mountain West) loaded the bases in the sixth on back-to-back singles from Trevor Kirk and Mark Shannon and a walk by Bayardi and then cut the deficit to 10-5 on RBI groundouts from Trent Cook and T.J. White.
Riverside extended the lead to 13-5 with two in the sixth and one in the seventh, cementing the two-game midweek sweep.
The Rebels will be back in action this weekend, hosting Air Force in a three-game set. First pitch Friday night is slated for 6:05 p.m. from Wilson Stadium.
