Rebels Win Marathon Game Over Aztecs 9-8
April 20, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball (25-12, 9-7 Mountain West) won 9-8 in a 17-inning marathon over San Diego State (19-18, 10-6 MW) on Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The 17 innings tied for the longest in UNLV history, which took place in 1970 where the Rebels won 1-0 over Pacific.
After five hours and one minute, UNLV scored the winning run when T.J. White hit a ground ball with the bases loaded to the Aztec second basemen, Tim Zier. Zier then made a poor throw to the plate attempting to retire Erik VanMeetren on a force play. SDSU catcher Jake Romanski could not handled the errant throw and the Rebels walked off by way of an error.
SDSU opened the game by scoring one run in the first, which was answered by UNLV in the bottom half of the frame. The Aztecs took a 4-1 lead after the third and extended it to an 8-3 lead after the sixth.
The Rebels rallied, scoring three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and tied the game by scoring one run in the ninth.
From the 10th inning through the 16th inning, it was a battle of bullpens, as neither staff allowed an earned run in extra frames. SDSU finished with 18 hits in the game, but UNLV held them to only four in extra innings.
John Richy (3-3) earned the win for the Rebels after pitching 3.0 innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters. The Aztecs’ Ethan Miller (3-3) took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on no hits while striking out six and walking three.
White continued his dominance from the plate, as he led UNLV, finishing 3-for-6 with one run scored. Matt McCallister and Joey Armstrong each had two RBI and McCallister hit his first career home run in the eighth inning.
The Aztecs and Rebels will be back in action tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. Probable starts for the game are UNLV’s Buddy Borden (4-1, 2.12 ERA) and SDSU’s Ryan Doran (6-2, 2.54 ERA).
