Pack Drops 7-2 Contest To New Mexico

RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (19-19, 7-10 MW) baseball team lost 7-2 to Mountain West leading New Mexico (23-16, 13-4 MW) at Peccole Park on Saturday afternoon. The Lobos have won the first two games of the series after taking Friday night’s game 5-2. The Wolf Pack is now 19-19 and 7-10 in MW play while UNM improved to 23-16 and 12-4 in the conference.
The Lobos scored the first five runs of the game and never trails in winning its fifth consecutive MW game. Two more runs in the top of the ninth made the final 7-2.
The Pack was held hitless until Brooks Klein singled to start the fifth inning. Nevada was outhit 17-7. The Pack scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to avoid the shutout.
Nevada lefty Tyler Wells (4-3) was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings on the mound. Sam Wolff (3-3) won his third of the season pitching 6.1 shutout innings.
Seven different Pack players collected a hit. Brad Gerig and Klein had RBI’s. UNM third baseman Alex Allbritton was 5-for-5 with an RBI. Alex Real (2-for-4,2R,2RBI) and Josh Melendez (3-for-4,R,RBI) each hit home runs in the game. Real and Chase Harris had two RBI apiece.
Game three is Sunday at 1 p.m. with Nevada senior pitcher Tom Jameson (1-6) facing UNM’s A.J. Carman (1-1). All middle school age children and under little leaguers wearing their jersey to the game will be admitted free while all other family members will pay just $5.
