April 24, 2013
Tempe, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (27-13, 11-7 Mountain West) dropped its lone midweek game to No. 8 Arizona State (25-12-1, 8-7 Pac-12) 5-2 on Wednesday night at Packard Stadium.
The Sun Devils scored early in the game, posting all five of their runs in the first four innings. UNLV did not get on the board until scoring two in the fifth inning.
UNLV threatened a couple different times late in the game, but ASU was able to get out of every jam unscathed.
Mark Shannon (4-2) took the loss for UNLV after he pitched 3.1 innings, where he allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits.
The Rebel relievers pitched well, keeping the team in the game through the later innings. John Richy, Brayden Torres, Tyler Iodence and Brady Zuniga combined to shut out ASU and only allow three hits over 4.2 innings.
Bayardi led UNLV, as he was the only Rebel to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI.
UNLV will continue its road trip, traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. tomorrow to face Mountain West leader No. 24 New Mexico for a three-game series starting on Friday.
