Rebels Drop Second Game To Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (27-15, 11-9 Mountain West) dropped the second game of its series with No. 24 New Mexico (26-16, 16-4) 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field.
The Rebels outhit UNM 11-9, but could not overcome four runs in the eighth inning to win.
New Mexico struck first in the fourth inning, but UNLV was able to hold them at bay and took the lead after Brandon Bayardi and Erik VanMeetren had back-to-back hits, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth. The Rebels tried to rally in the top of the ninth, and had the tying run in scoring position, but New Mexico held on for the win.
It was a pitcher’s duel through the first six innings, as both starters took did not factor into the decision. Each pitcher allowed five hits, and Buddy Borden (5-1) allowed only one run in the fourth inning, before being pulled after 6.0 innings of work. Borden struck out a game-high three, including D.J. Peterson twice.
VanMeetren led the way for UNLV, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI. Joey Swanner also had three hits in the game and finished 3-for-5 with one RBI. Joey Armstrong was the only other Rebel to have multiple hits and he finished 2-for-2 with a walk.
