Rebels Suffer 9-1 Loss At New Mexico On Sunday
April 29, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team suffered a 9-1 loss at New Mexico on Sunday at Isotopes Park. UNM (26-19, 12-3 Mountain West) jumped out early thanks to a three-run home run by third baseman D.J. Peterson in the bottom of the first. The Lobos would maintain a lead the rest of the way, tacking on an additional six runs in the eighth en route to their third straight victory over UNLV (20-24, 5-13 MW).
Rebel starter Buddy Borden (1-4) took the loss after allowing three runs in five-and-two-thirds innings pitched. For the most part, the sophomore right-hander pitched very well excluding a first-inning mistake resulting in Peterson's three-run homer. Borden struck out six and walked four. New Mexico starter Gera Sanchez (6-1) earned the win after allowing just one run in seven innings pitched.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, UNLV got on the board after Trent Cook's one-out single to right scored Trevor Kirk from second base. Kirk led off the frame with a hard double to the left-centerfield gap. That would be all the Rebels could muster, however, as Sanchez worked out of multiple Rebel threats on the afternoon.
New Mexico scored six runs in the eighth on three two-run home runs, all with two outs. Kyle Stiner, Mitchell Garver and D.J. Peterson all went deep in the frame, Peterson's being his second long-ball of the day.
UNLV returns home this Tuesday and Wednesday to take on UC Riverside at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. First pitch on Tuesday is at 6:05 p.m. The Rebels will resume Mountain West play next weekend at San Diego State.
