Rebels Use Four Home Runs To Rout Highlanders 20-6

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (28-16, 11-10 Mountain West) used four home runs to down UC Riverside (18-22, 7-8 Big West) 20-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
UNLV’s Patrick Armstrong hit a two-run homer in the third and another two-run shot in the sixth while Matt McCallister hit a grand slam in his first at bat in the second inning. Brandon Bayardi also went deep with a three-run variety in the fifth.
The Rebels scored nine unanswered runs in the second and third innings after being shut out in the first. UNLV would go on to score six runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to give the Rebels a total of 20 runs in the game. In two games against UC Riverside, UNLV has outscored the Highlanders 44-17.
John Richy (4-4) earned the win for the Rebels after pitching 7.0 innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits while striking out five. Freshmen Bryan Bonnell and Cody Roper each pitched an inning of relief in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
Pat Armstrong was a triple away from the cycle as he went 4-for-4 with two homers, a double and single. He crossed home plate a team-high five times on the day and had four RBI. Justin Jones also had a four hit game as he finished 4-for-6 with five RBI and a run scored. McCallister finished 1-for-2 but led the team with six RBI.
UNLV will resume Mountain West action this weekend as the Rebels will host Fresno State May 3-5. UNLV took two-of-three games from the Bulldogs in Fresno, Calif. earlier this season.
