LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team fell to UC Riverside Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game, 5-2, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Highlanders struck early, posting at least one run in three of the first four innings en route to earning a series split with the Rebels (21-25).
UC Riverside (15-24) starter Mitch Patito (3-3) earned the win after working seven scoreless innings and allowing just five hits. The right-hander also struck out six while walking three. Meanwhile, UNLV freshman John Richy (2-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs in five innings of work.
Highlanders leadoff man Eddie Young got things going in the first, taking the second pitch he saw to deep to right-centerfield for a double. Young moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Vince Gonzalez's single up the middle, making it 1-0 UCR.
The Highlanders added to their lead in the third after Young led off the frame with a walk. The speedy lefthander advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on David Andriese's infield single making it 2-0, UCR.
In the fourth, UC Riverside scored two more. Drake Zarate coaxed a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Joe Chavez's single through the left side. Both runners moved up 90 feet on another wild pitch and ultimately scored after back-to-back singles from Cody Hough and Young. UCR scored one more in the seventh and that would be all they needed to earn the victory and a series split.
UNLV hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at San Diego State. Game one is slated for 6 p.m. Friday evening and can be heard live on UNLVRebels.com.
