May 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (32-17, 14-11 Mountain West) won the series opener 12-2 over rival Nevada, Reno (24-25, 11-14 MW) in the second installment of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy this season on Friday night.
The Rebels had a tough task ahead of them, as they faced pitcher Braden Shipley who is a potential top-10 Major League Baseball draft pick.
Shipley was as advertised through the first four innings, allowing just one hit. That hit, however, was Patrick Armstrong’s fifth home run of the season, giving UNLV a 1-0 lead.
The Rebels then got after Shipley in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The hitting parade continued in the sixth, where UNLV scored three more runs on three hits to take a 7-0 lead.
UNR answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Those would be the only runs that Rebel starter Erick Fedde would allow.
UNLV added four more runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth to seal the victory.
Shipley (7-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out six and walking four in 5.2 innings of work. Fedde (6-2), who pitched into the ninth inning, picked up the win after allowing only the two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking none in 8.1 innings of work.
T.J. White led the Rebels from the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI in his first game in over 10 days. Joey Swanner also recorded three hits as he finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and three doubles. Joey Armstrong and Erik VanMeetren were the only other Rebels to record multiple hits in the game.
UNLV and Nevada, Reno will be back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Buddy Borden is projected to get the start for the Rebels, while Tyler Wells is projected to get the nod for the Wolf Pack.
