Rebels Win 2nd Straight Over Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team won its second straight game over Sacramento State, 5-3, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field.
The Rebels (25-29) scored the first three runs of the game with one in the first inning and two in the third. Trevor Kirk's RBI single scored Mark Shannon to open the scoring, while Shannon's ground out to second base scored T.J. White before Trent Cook's RBI single scored Joey Swanner to give UNLV a 3-0 lead.
Sacramento State (29-25) scored a run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cut the Rebels' lead to 4-3. Kirk's sacrifice fly scored Shannon to give UNLV a fourth run in the fifth inning, while the Rebels added an insurance run in the ninth on a wild pitch.
Zack Hartman (3-1) picked up the win for the Rebels after pitching four innings, giving up four hits and a run, while Zak Qualls threw two-and-a-third innings in relief surrendering five hits and two runs. Brady Zuniga closed out the game to earn the save, pitching two-and-two-thirds innings and giving up three hits.
Brennan Leitao (6-5) took the loss for the Hornets, pitching four innings and giving up seven hits and three runs.
The Rebels had 14 hits to Sacramento State's 12. Swanner went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Shannon was 2-for-4 with and RBI and two runs scored. Kirk was also 2-for-4 with two RBI. Erik VanMeetren also had two hits for the Rebels, including a double.
The three-game series between the Hornets and Rebels will conclude with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
