Rebels Drop First Fall Exhibition

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV jumped out to an early two-run lead, but Cal State Fullerton rallied with a combined six runs in the eighth and ninth innings for a 7-2 win over the Rebels on Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in the first of two fall exhibition games.
 
The Rebels’ early lead came off of a two-run homer by senior Brandon Bayardi in the bottom of the third. Bayardi finished the game going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. The Titans cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth as Chad Wallach was able to knock in Michael Lorenzen.

Cal State Fullerton exploded in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring three runs in each frame. Jake Jefferies drove in two with a single to right field and Matt Orloff drove in another to give the Titans a lead they never relinquished.

Sophomore Erick Fedde got the start for UNLV and struck out two while walking two. He did not allow a run and scattered four hits across in 2.2 innings.  Junior Buddy Borden came into the game in the third and gave up one run on two hits, while striking out four and walking three in 3.1 innings. Senior Brady Zuniga entered the game in the seventh and was credited with the loss after allowing two runs off of one hit. Junior Zack Hartman and sophomore Zak Qualls each pitched in the later innings as well.

Freshman Thomas Eshelman earned the win for Cal State Fullerton, going 3.0 innings and striking out three while scattering three hits.

Each team left 11 runners on base and the Titans recorded 13 hits while UNLV finished with 11.

UNLV and Cal State Fullerton will wrap up their two-game exhibition series Sunday. Admission is free of charge and the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. (PT).
