Zier, Derby Earn Weekly Conference Baseball Honors
Feb. 18, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State second baseman Tim Zier and right-hander Bubba Derby have earned Mountain West Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for games played from Feb. 15-17, 2013. It is the first MW honor for both student-athletes.
Zier, a junior from Escondido, Calif., hit .429 (6-of-14) for the week as the Aztecs swept No. 25 San Diego in a three-game series to begin the 2013 season. Zier earned SDSU's first RBI in each game as the Aztecs never trailed during the series. In Friday's season opener, Zier hit an RBI double in his first at-bat and ended up 3-of-5 from the plate with three RBI, a double and a run scored in the 8-1 win.
During Saturday's 4-2 victory, he hit an RBI single in the first inning, then scored to give SDSU a lead it would not relinquish. Zier added an RBI double later in the game to finish with two hits and two RBI. Zier hit a bases-loaded double in the third inning of Sunday's 5-3 win to put the first runs of the game on the scoreboard. He was also perfect in the field on 15 chances in the three-game series (5 putouts, 10 assists and no errors).
Derby, a rookie from Monrovia, Calif., earned two saves in the three-game series with nationally-ranked San Diego. Derby made his first collegiate appearance in the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-2 win with a two-run lead would face runners at second and third with no outs. He struck out the next batter before getting a ground ball to first that turned into a double play to end the game. In Sunday's 5-3 victory, Derby was called out of the bullpen in the ninth with a two-run lead, bases loaded and no outs. He struck out the next three batters, the No. 2-4 hitters, to preserve the win. In two innings of work, Derby struck out four batters and only gave up two hits.
San Diego State opens it home season this weekend with four games against sixth-ranked Oregon State. That series gets underway Thursday evening (Feb. 21) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
