Rebels Set for Kleberg Bank College Classic

- The UNLV baseball team will continue action on the road as it travels to Corpus Christi, Texas for the 2012 Kleberg Bank College Classic this weekend.

The Rebels will kick off action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the host Islanders at Whataburger Field, home of the Corpus Christi Hooks. UNLV will then square off against former Mountain West rival and new Pac-12 member Utah Saturday morning at 9 a.m. PT. UNLV will close out the tournament against Nebraska at 9 a.m. PT Sunday.

  UNLV will hit the road once again this weekend, traveling west to the Lone Star state for the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
  The Rebels will have played their first seven games on the road this year, the opposite of last season when they played their first eight games at home.

  Texas A&M Corpus Christi enters the weekend tournament with a 4-1 mark and in the midst of a three-game winning streak.
  The Islanders took three out of four games from Nebraska-Omaha and picked up a midweek win at Houston, 3-2, on Tuesday night.
  Adam Hoelscher will be the Friday night starter against the Rebels. Hoelscher is 1-0 on the year, having hurled a complete-game, five hitter, strikign out seven while walking just two in the season opening 3-0 win.
  Bobby Buckner has the hot bat for host team so far this year, hitting .400 (4-for-10) over the first four games with four RBI and a run scored. Jeramie Marek and Weston Montgomery are each hitting .333 on the year to bolster the Islander offense.

  Former Mountain West rival and new Pac-12 member Utah will be UNLV’s second opponent of the weekend. The Utes enter the tournament with a 1-3 record following their four-game weekend at UC Davis.
  Joe Pond is the expected starter for Saturday morning’s game and brings a 1-0 record and 1.50 ERA to the hill. Pond scattered seven hits over six innings of work and gave up just one run in Utah’s lone weekend win over the Aggies.
  Parker Morin is batting .375 (6-for-16) with a double and five RBI so far. James Brooks is second on the team in batting at .313 (5-for-16) with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

  Nebraska enters the tournament with an 0-3 mark under first-year head coach and former MLB World Series Champion and All-Star Darin Erstad. The Cornhuskers opened up the 2012 season with a three-game series against Gonzaga in Peoria, Arizona.
  The Cornhuskers are led offensively by a pair of .500 hitters in Chad Christensen (.545, 6-for-11) and Michael Pritchard (.500, 5-for-10). Christensen is slugging .818 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.
  Kyle Kubat is slated to make his second start of the season against the Rebels on Sunday. The freshman lefty went five innings, giving up seven hits and walking three in a no decision against Gonzaga.

  UNLV baseball opened its 46th season of play with four games last weekend. The Rebels dropped their weekend series at Loyola Marymount, but ended the roadtrip on a high note, knocking off No. 21 UC Irvine by a 3-2 count.
