Rebels Hold Off Braves
Feb. 28, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV Rebels (6-3) held off a late inning rally by Bradley (2-6) to win 8-6 in the second game of the Rebel Classic Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels would never trail in the game and started off strong, scoring two runs in the opening frame. Sophomore T.J. White scored when senior Brandon Bayardi grounded out to the shortstop and senior Mark Shannon scored on the next at-bat when sophomore Erik VanMeetren hit a double.
Strong pitching from both sides would be the story from the second through the fourth innings as only three total hits were allowed.
UNLV would widen its gap in the fifth when Bayardi singled up the middle, scoring White from third. The Rebels would score at least one run in each of the remaining innings.
Sophomore Erick Fedde pitched well in his third start, moving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed only one run on four hits through 6.2 innings while striking out seven batters. Senior Brady Zuniga came in for relief in the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three.
The Braves would attempt to rally late in the game, scoring all six of their runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, including four runs in the final frame. Bradley would come up short when senior Andrew Beresford got the only batter he faced to fly out to left field to end the game.
Leading the Rebels from the plate was Shannon, as he finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bayardi led the team with three RBI as he finished 2-for-5. Junior Patrick Armstrong and sophomore Erik VanMeetren would be the only other two Rebels to have multiple hits, as they finished 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. As a team, UNLV finished with 15 hits, its most in a single game so far this season.
The Rebels will be back in action tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. as they will face Loyola Marymount, who moved to 4-5 on the year with its 9-0 victory over Hawai’i in the opener of the Rebel Classic. Junior Buddy Borden (1-1, 0.00 ERA) is the projected starter for UNLV and Trevor Megill (1-1, 2.77 ERA) is expected to go for the Lions. Their game will directly follow a matchup between Hawai’i and Bradley, where first pitch is scheduled at 2:05 p.m.
