Munoz Named Conference Baseball Player Of The Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State second baseman Matt Muñoz has been named the Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week for games played from Feb. 27-March 4, 2012.
Muñoz, a freshman from West Covina, Calif., hit .538 (7-for-13) as the Aztecs went 4-0 on the week and won the 2012 Aztec Invitational presented by Sheraton Mission Valley. Muñoz hit safely in all four games, first as a pinch hitter in a 4-3 win over Cal Poly on Thursday, then as a starter at second base against Milwaukee (7-4), San Francisco (6-1) and Cal State Northridge (12-9).
The Aztec Invitational Most Valuable Player scored the game's first run in the first inning against Milwaukee on Friday night and hit a one-out double in the eighth to start a five-run rally with the Aztecs down 4-2. Against San Francisco on Saturday, Muñoz was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. In the tournament finale against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Muñoz was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Up next for San Diego State is a short trip north to take on Long Beach State on Tuesday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Blair Field.
