Rebels Host Cougars This Weekend

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team will continue action from Wilson Stadium this weekend as it hosts Pac-12 foe Washington State in a three-game weekend series.
The Rebels (7-6) moved to 4-0 in midweek games with a 14-3 victory over Southern Utah on Tuesday night at Wilson Stadium. UNLV has won four of its first six games at home this year and will play its next seven before hitting the road again.
Probable Weekend Rotations
Game 1 - Joe Robinson (1-1, 3.06 ERA) vs. J.D. Leckenby (2-1, 3.24 ERA)
Game 2 - Zak Qualls (2-0, 1.42 ERA) vs. Kyle Swannack (1-1, 3.38 ERA)
Game 3 - Erick Fedde (1-1, 3.20 ERA) vs. Tanner Chleborad (0-0, 3.00 ERA)
HOME SWEET HOME
After spending the first two weekends and seven games on the road, the UNLV baseball team embarked on a 13-game home stand that kicked off Feb. 28 against CSU Bakersfield.
The Rebels are 4-2 through the first six games, including a series sweep over CSUB. UNLV will host Washington State this weekend in a three game set, marking the second of three straight weekends with games at Wilson Stadium.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Washington State enters this weekend’s series having won six of its last seven games, including a series win over Northern Colorado in Pullman.
Outfielder Nate Blackham leads the Cougar lineup, batting .406 (13-for-32) with seven RBI and is tied for the team lead in runs scored with 10. Right fielder Derek Jones checks in with a .364 (12-for-33)average at the plate and six extra-base hits and eight RBI, including a team-leading two home runs.
WSU will feature three right-handed pitchers its weekend rotation, starting with J.D. Leckenby Friday night. Leckenby is 2-1 on the year with a 3.24 ERA in 16.2 innings on the hill. The sophomore has 14 strikeouts against just three walks and a .328 batting average against.
Kyle Swannack will toe the mound Saturday afternoon for the Cougars. The 6’4, 225-pound junior is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 13.1 innings worked this year. Swannack has given up just five runs-all earned- in three starts and has totaled nine strikeouts.
Tanner Chleborad is scheduled to make his third start of the season in Sunday’s series finale. Chleborad is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work so far this season.
UNLV and Washington State will meet for the 17th time in series history Friday night at Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels and Cougars first met back in 1976, with WSU earning a 5-2 win at a netural site. Wazzu has the edge in games played in Las Vegas, holding a 5-4 mark over the Rebels.
UNLV did capture the series win last year in Pullman behind a complete-game effort by 2011 Mountain West Pitcher of the Year Tanner Peters in a 4-1 game one win and timely hitting in a 6-3 win in the series finale.
KEEP EM COMING
UNLV pounded out 18 hits en route to a 14-3 win over Southern Utah in a game that forced players to deal with wind gusts that reached 70 miles per hour.
In all, nine different Rebels had a hit while five enjoyed multi-hit games, including Danny Higa, who posted a 4-for-4 day at the plate and was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
