#DIAMONDDOGS LOOK TO BREAK OUT OF A SLUMP
After Fresno State picked up its first series win over USC at home the 'Dogs have dropped its last five games. The Bulldogs fell 10-3 to San Jose State on March 5 in a mid-week game at home before visiting Cal for a four-game series last Thursday-Sunday. The 'Dogs battled in every game in Berkeley but were ultimately swept by the Bears of the Pac-12. Each game, beginning with a 5-4 extra innings loss on day one of the series began a continous struggle with the Bears. Saturday and Sunday was much of the same as the `Dogs fell in hard-fought games, by one run on Saturday, 4-3, and a four-run seventh by the Bears broke a 4-4 tie on Sunday to give Cal the sweep.
With a lineup featuring 11 freshman, two of which that are redshirt freshman, there's been ample opportunity for the young guns. Last time out versus Cal, Kevin Viers registered five of the teams 12 RBIs during the four-game series. Louie Payetta picked up three starts in Berkeley, going .375 from the plate and posted one RBI and one run. Luke Wiechec made two appearances in relief, surrendering no runs and striking out one in 1.1 innings. While Brody Russell registered his first career home run and Aaron Gillis picked up his first start on the mound in the mid-week game on March 5 prior to the trip to Cal.
The Fresno State weekend rotation of William Munro, Derick Velazquez and Tim Borst has a combined record of 3-2 and an ERA of 3.38 as a group in 69.1 innings pitched. The threesome has also produced 33 strikeouts with Velazquez leading all starters with 14 K's.
IF EVERYDAY WAS SUNDAY
The Bulldogs' Aaron Judge, a 2013 Preseason All-American, produced another Sunday statement versus Cal on March 10 by posting his third home run of the season, all three homers have been a result of a Sunday plate appearance by Judge. The previous Sunday at home against USC he had four hits, including a triple, two doubles, and a single - just the home run away from recording the program's second cycle. Through the first four weeks of the season, Judge is 13-for-19 (.684) with 10 RBIs in Sunday games.
Derick Velazquez NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
The Fresno State right-hander earned his first career Mountain West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor as the league's recipient for games played from Feb. 25-March 3, 2013. Velazquez, a sophomore from Los Banos, Calif., pitched a complete game to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 win on Saturday over USC in his third career start without allowing an earned run over nine strong innings of work. Velazquez had a shutout going until the final out of the contest when an unearned run crossed the plate on a walk. He surrendered seven hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts, becoming the first Bulldog pitcher to go the distance this season.
