Aztecs to Open Conference Season at Fresno State

San Diego State continues road action this weekend as they open their Mountain West season with a three-game series at Fresno State. The opening contest against the Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday, March 15, at 6:35 p.m. at Beiden Field in Fresno. The teams will also meet in single games on Saturday (March 16 at 6:35 p.m.) and Sunday (March 17 at 1:05 p.m.).

SDSU's record against Fresno State stands at 79-84 with the Bulldogs being the team that the Aztecs have faced the most in the sport of baseball. The last contest between the schools came in 2010 in San Diego with FSU claiming a 10-3 victory. SDSU's last win vs. the Bulldogs came in 2009 at the NCAA Regional in Irvine. The Aztecs are 39-41 at home, 36-42 in Fresno and 4-1 on neutral fields against FSU.

San Diego State has been a team of streaks over the first four weeks of the season. The Aztecs began the year with a three-game winning streak followed by a five-game losing streak. SDSU then won four games in a row before dropping its next four to as it currently is on a five-game losing streak entering the game at Fresno State on Friday.

Catcher Jake Romanski had an 11-game hitting streak come to an end in the game at Arkansas on March 9. In those contests he went 16-for-38 (.421) with three double and five runs scored. Romanski's 11-game streak is the longest by an Aztec this season. Romanski has appeared in 13 of SDSU's 17 contest this season, failing to get a hit in only two of those games. He had a single and double plus a run scored in the loss at UC Irvine on Tuesday (March 12).

Sophomore center fielder Greg Allen had a pair of hits and scored a run in the loss at UC Irvine on Tuesday (March 12). He turned in his second four-hit effort of the young season last Wednesday (Feb. 27) in the 7-4 win at Santa Clara. He also had four RBI in that contest with a pair of bases-loaded singles. Allen scored three times in each of SDSU's first two games vs. Seton Hall. He leads the team in hits (20), runs (14) and stolen bases (5).

Freshman closer Bubba Derby recorded his fourth save of the season in the win against Seton Hall on Tuesday, March 3. He tossed the final 1.1 innings of that contest allowing no runs on a hit with one strikeout. Derby has made a total of seven relief appearances this season covering 10.2 innings with just under half of his outs (14-of-34) coming via the strikeout. His four saves is tied for first in the Mountain West.

Senior Ethan Miller made his first start of the year in the series finale at Arkansas on Sunday, March 9. In that game he tossed 6.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. He left the contest after six innings with the scored tied 0-0 and was not involved in the decision.

As a team, San Diego state ranks among the top 60 in the nation in four categories. There are currently a total fo 295 teams playing Division I baseball. That list included stolen bases (22 - 54th), double plays (17 - 20th), double plays per nine innings (1.06 - 38th) and fielding percentage (.978 - 24th). Individually, Bubba Derby ranks 16th in the nation in saves with four and Philip Walby is 41st in hits allowed per nine innings (4.97). In addition, Brad Haynal's six doubles ranks 59th.

Freshman Danny Sheehan had a pair of hits and an RBI in the series finale at Arkansas on March 9. It was his first multiple-hit contest and his first collegiate RBI in the seven contests in which he has appeared ... Sophomore pitcher Michael Cederoth had struck out six batters in each of his first three starts this season prior to fanning seven at Arkansas last weekend ... Pitchers Michael Cederoth (.177) and Philip Walby's (.179) have the two lowest opponent batting averages in the Mountain West this week ... After starting the season 1-for-29, shortstop Evan Potter is 7-for-18 (.389) with a double and two RBI in SDSU's last seven contests ... Aztec pinch hitters are 2-for-8 (.250) after the first four weeks of the season. Opponents have gone 3-for-18 (.167) ... The Aztecs have caught almost half (13 of 28) of the runners attempting to steal this season. Catcher Brad Haynal has nabbed 6-of-11 while Jake Romanski has caught 5-of-15 ... First baseman Ryan Muno suffered a broken hand during practice four weeks ago and is expected to return for next week's series against UNLV. Muno went 4-for-13 (.308) during the opening weekend of the season ... Tim Zier is hitting .400 (8-for-20) with runners in scoring position while John Spirk is at .333 (5-for-15).

San Diego State returns home on Tuesday, March 19, for a non-conference contest against Long Beach State at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs will then open their 2013 conference home schedule with a three-game series against UNLV that gets underway on Friday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. SDSU and UNLV will also met in single games on Saturday (March 23) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (March 24) at 1:00 p.m.
