Aztecs Host UNLV for Three Games This Weekend

WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEKEND IN AZTEC BASEBALL
SDSU opens it Mountain West home slate with a three-game series against conference foe UNLV beginning Friday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs and Rebels will also meet in singles games on Saturday (March 23) and Sunday (March 24) at 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
SDSU's record against UNLV over the years stands at 67-46. The teams first met in 1978 and were members of the Western Athletic Conference together for 19 years before moving to the Mountain West for the 1999-2000 season. The Aztecs have won 18 of the last 22 against the Rebels over the past four seasons including a win in the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas in 2012. SDSU is 32-14 vs. UNLV in San Diego, 34-28 in Las Vegas and 1-4 at neutral sites.
GWYNN GETS 300TH WIN
SDSU Head Coach Tony Gwynn picked up his 300th victory in charge of the SDSU baseball program during the Aztecs' 12-2 win over Long Beach State on Tuesday.

San Diego State has been a team of streaks over the first five weeks of the season. The Aztecs began the year with a three-game winning streak followed by a five-game losing streak. SDSU then won four games in a row before dropping six straight. The Aztecs have won their last three games.
ROMANSKI CONTINUES HOT HITTING
Catcher Jake Romanski has hit safely in five of SDSU's six games going 12-for-25 (.480) with a double, eight runs scored and five RBI. His five-hit effort at Fresno State on March 16 was a career high and the only five-hit game by an Aztec this season. He also tied his Aztec best with three runs scored in that contest. He had an 11-game hitting streak come to an end in the game at Arkansas on March 9. He has not committed an error behind the plate in 116 chances this season.
ALLEN ON THE OFFENSIVE
Sophomore center fielder Greg Allen has hit safely in five of SDSU's last six contest going 8-for-23 (.348). He has stolen a base in four of the last five contests. He turned in his second four-hit effort of the young season on Feb. 27 in the 7-4 win at Santa Clara. He also had four RBI in that contest with a pair of bases-loaded singles. He leads the team in runs (18) and stolen bases (9).
Freshman closer Bubba Derby recorded his fifth save of the season in the win at Fresno State last Sunday (March 17). He tossed the final inning of that contest allowing no runs on a hit with one strikeout. Derby has made a total of nine relief appearances this season covering 12.2 innings with just under half of his outs (17-of-38) coming via the strikeout. His five saves rank second in the Mountain West this week.
MILLER CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Senior Ethan Miller tossed three more innings of shutout baseball in two appearances during last weekend's (March 15-17) series at Fresno State. In the process he lowered his team-leading earned run average to 1.80. Miller made his first start of the year in the series finale at Arkansas on March 9. In that game he tossed 6.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. He left the contest after six innings with the scored tied 0-0 and was not involved in the decision.
FRANCE HEATS UP
Freshman third baseman Ty France hit safely in all three games of the Fresno State series last weekend going 5-for-12 (.417). One of his hits at Fresno State was a three-run homer in Saturday's (March 16) contest won by SDSU 11-6. France had a season-high four RBI in that game. He had a single and two RBI vs. Long Beach State on Tuesday (March 19). His four-game hitting streak is the longest current streak on the team.
ZIER HITS AWAY
Second baseman Tim Zier had a career-high four hits in the win over Long Beach State on Tuesday (March 19). He also had two RBI and two runs scored in that contest. Zier has hit safely in four of the last five games going 9-for-21 (.421) with three RBI and five runs scored. Over the past five contests he has improved his batting average from .234 to .282.
NATIONAL STAT LEADERS
As a team, San Diego state ranks among the top 50 in the nation in three categories. There are currently a total of 295 teams playing Division I baseball. That list included stolen bases (29 - 48th), double plays (18 - 48th) and fielding percentage (.978 - 23rd). Individually, Bubba Derby ranks 18th in the nation in saves with five.
Greg Allen and Jake Romanski have reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in each of the last 11 games ... Freshman Danny Sheehan had his second two-hit effort in his last three games with a pair of singles vs. Long Beach State on Tuesday (March 19) ... Matt Muñoz has a personal season-high three hits and two runs scored in the victory over Long Beach State on Tuesday ... The Aztec pitching staff has a 2.57 earned run average over the past four contests ... Sophomore outfielder Steven Pallares notched his first career triple in the 4-2 win at Fresno State last Sunday (March 17. That three-bagger drove in the tying run and he scores what would be the winning run on a single by Mitch Bluman ... Pallares is 4-for-9 in the last two games with a double, triple and four RBI ... Justin Hepner recorded his first win of the year with four innings of relief work in the 11-5 win at Fresno State last Saturday (March 16) ... Philip Walby's .185 opponent batting average ranks second in the conference this week while Michael Cederoth's mark of .206 is fifth ... Sophomore pitcher Michael Cederoth has struck out six batters in four of his five starts this season. He had seven K's in the game at Arkansas on March 7.
