Rebels Lose Series Opener 5-3 To Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (16-6, 1-3) dropped its first Mountain West road game of the season 5-3 at San Diego State (11-11, 3-1) on Friday night.
The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Rebels responded in the top of the second when Brandon Bayardi hit his second home run of the year to tie the game. They would take a 2-1 lead later in the frame when Ryan Scott dove around the SDSU catcher to score safely.
The Aztecs tied the game up in the bottom half of the second and then took thelead in the bottom of the third. The score would sit 3-2 until UNLV tied it again in the seventh when Matt McCallister drove in T.J. White from second.
SDSU recaptured the lead in the eighth, scoring two runs off of reliever Tyler Iodence. The Aztecs would hold the lead, retiring the Rebels in order in the top of the ninth.
As a team, UNLV was held to just four hits on the night. Bayardi accounted for two of the four hits as he homered and singled in the game.
Erick Fedde (3-0) got the start for the Rebels, pitching 7.0 innings. He allowed six hits while striking out five. Iodence (0-1) took his first loss after he allowed two hits and two earned runs in his inning of work.
