Garver Named MW Player of the Week

March 25, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico senior catcher was named Mountain West Player of the Week for games played from March 18-24. It is his first such recognition this season and the fifth of his career.

The Albuquerque native hit .625 (10-for-16) as the Lobos went 3-2 for the week, including a 2-1 series win against Nevada in MW play to remain tied atop the conference. Garver recorded at least one hit in all five games, extending his current hitting streak to a career-best 22 games, while accounting for two game-winning, walk-off hits.

In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Missouri State, Garver drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th with a single to give UNM a 6-5 victory.  He was 3-for-4 with one RBI, one walk and one run scored for the game and was 1-for-2 with one walk in the nightcap, an 8-2 loss.

Garver’s second walk-off hit of the week was a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth against Nevada on Friday, capping a six-run rally for a 9-8 victory.  He was 3-for-4 with two RBI, two doubles, one walk and one run scored.  Garver was 1-for-3 in the Lobos’ 3-2 loss to Nevada in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.  The Lobos rebounded with a 7-5 win in game two with Garver producing his third multi-hit game of the week, going 2-for-3 with one walk and four runs scored.

For the week, Garver, a four-hole hitter, scored six runs, batted in three runs, struck out only once and hit two doubles. He walked four times, stole four bases and was hit by pitches twice. Defensively, Garver recorded 21 putouts, eight assists and made his first error of the season from his catching position.

The preseason All-American is now secnod on the team in batting (.389), slugging (.526) and on-base percentage (.482). He leads the Lobos with nine doubles and eight steals, is tied for second on the club with 21 runs, and ranks third with 18 RBI. The only game this season he did not record a hit was the season-opener against Oklahoma St. in which he went 0-for-2 with two walks.
