ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Following a 13-game home stand in which the Rebels posted a 7-6 record, UNLV will hit the road again, playing the next seven of eight games away from Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels traveled to Tempe, Ariz. last week for a Wednesday night game at Arizona State, reviving a rivalry that dates back to the 1974 season. No. 14 ASU put up a four-run second to clip the Rebels, 4-2.
UNLV then traveled to Colorado Springs for its second Mountain West weekend against Air Force. The two teams traded games the first two days before Air Force rallied late in game three for a 12-5 win, securing the series.
The Rebels will travel to Fort Worth, Texas this weekend for a three-game set with TCU before rounding out their roadtrip with a single game at Southern Utah on April 3.
SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGS
TCU enters this weekend’s series with a 12-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Mountain West games.
The Horned Frogs have dropped four of five games since a weekend sweep of UNLV in Las Vegas March 16-18, including a pair of Tuesday losses at Texas State and UT Arlington.
Josh Elander and Jason Coats lead the TCU offense, batting .338 and .301 respectively through 22 games this season. Elander has tallied six extra-base hits and 15 RBI while tying for the team lead in stolen bases with five. Coats enters the series with a team-leading 28 hits, including three home runs, two of which came in a 10-2 win over the Rebels on March 18.
Stefan Crichton (3-0, 3.21 ERA) will get the start in game one Friday night at Lupton Stadium. Crichton will be making his seventh start of the year and has logged 33.2 innings of work, striking out 20 while walking nine and keeping opposing batters to a .238 clip at the plate.
Andrew Mithell (1-2, 6.00 ERA) will look to even his record in game two. Mitchell’s lone win this season came at UNLV in the second game of the series. He will be making his sixth start of the year and has totaled 21.0 innings with a team-high 28 strikeouts against just seven walks.
Brandon Finnegan (0-3, 5.73 ERA) will shore up the TCU rotation in Sunday’s series finale. Finnegan is still searching for his first win of the year in his seventh start. The freshman lefty has thrown 22.0 innings on the year with 18 punchouts and eight walks.
Since taking over the reigns at UNLV prior to the 2011 season, Tim Chambers and company have posted a 1-8 record against TCU.
With the Frogs moving to the Big 12 following this season, the three-game set in Fort Worth this weekend could possibly be the last time the two teams meet.
SERIES HISTORY - TCU
UNLV and TCU will meet this weekend for the second time in three weeks as the two schools kicked off Mountain West action March 16-18 in Las Vegas.
TCU has dominated the series, holding a 35-13 edge in the all-time series. The Horned Frogs have won the last eight games against UNLV and will be hosting the Rebels for possibly the last time in series history as TCU is set to join the Big 12 following the 2012 season.
