Rebels Wrap Up Roadtrip At Southern Utah

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team will look to continue the momentum of its 11-0 shutout win over TCU on Sunday tomorrow afternoon as they wrap up their recent roadtrip with an afternoon matinee at Southern Utah University.
The Rebels (13-15, 2-7 Mountain West) pounded out 20 hits on the way to their first shutout win at TCU in series history. UNLV will wrap up its four-game series with the Thunderbirds (6-20, 0-0 Summit) tomorrow afternoon and bring a close to the series with the most games played in UNLV history.
UNLV holds a 96-18-1 edge in the series and has dominated in 2012, outscoring the T-Birds by a 55-17 margin.
Tuesday - Mark Shannon (1-2, 6.62 ERA) vs. TBA
Following a 13-game home stand in which the Rebels posted a 7-6 record, UNLV hit the road again, playing the following seven of eight games away from Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels traveled to Tempe, Ariz. for a Wednesday night game at Arizona State on March 21, reviving a rivalry that dates back to the 1974 season. No. 14 ASU put up a four-run second to clip the Rebels, 4-2.
UNLV then traveled to Colorado Springs for its second Mountain West weekend against Air Force. The two teams traded games the first two days before Air Force rallied late in game three for a 12-5 win, securing the series.
The Rebels then dropped the first two games of its weekend series at TCU this past weekend, but rallied Sunday for an 11-0 shutout win over the Horned Frogs. UNLV will round out their roadtrip with a single game at Southern Utah on tomorrow afternoon.
SCOUTING THE T-BIRDS
Southern Utah University enters Tuesday afternoon’s game in the midst of a four-game losing streak, dating back to last Tuesday’s 19-2 defeat at Wilson Stadium.
The T-Birds were swept in a three-game weekend series at Utah Valley over the weekend and were outscored 41-10.
Marcus Romero leads the Thunderbird offense with a .329 (28-for-85) average at the plate. Romero has totaled nine extra-base hits and has a team-high 20 RBI on the year. Bo Cuthbertson ranks second on the team in average (.315, 28-for-89), RBI (18) and slugging percentage (.483). Cuthbertson has also drawn 19 walks on the year and leads the squad with a .436 on-base percentage.
UNLV and Southern Utah will be meeting for the final time in series history tomorrow afternoon. The meeting, the fourth of this season and 116th in the all-time series, will bring to an end the historic rivalry that dates back to the 1967 season.
SUU announced that it will not continue its baseball program following the 2012 season.
UNLV holds a 96-18-1 lead in the all-time series and 3-0 this season against the T-Birds, with all three wins coming at Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.
SEASON SERIES NOTES
-UNLV has outscored Southern Utah 55-17 in three games this season at Wilson Stadium.
-Junior outfielder Brandon Bayardi is hitting .563 against the Thunderbirds this year, tallying 13 RBI and a home run.
-Freshman John Richy has made two starts this season, both coming against Southern Utah and both resulting in wins. Richy has logged 12.1 innings against SUU with seven strikeouts against only three walks.
