Kirk, Fedde Sweep Mountain West Awards
April 4, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Two members of the UNLV baseball team have been named the Mountain West Pitcher and Player of the Week, announced the conference office.
Senior outfielder Trevor Kirk and freshman right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde each are first-time honorees and became the first Rebels to earn the weekly award this season.
Kirk, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., hit .529 (9-17) for the week as the Rebels went 2-2. Kirk was 3-for-3 with a career-high four runs scored and one RBI in a 19-2 win over Southern Utah on Tuesday night. He then collected at least one hit in each of UNLV's three games at rival TCU this weekend.
In Saturday's 2-1 loss, Kirk hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left for the Rebels' only run of the game. In Sunday's 11-0 win, Kirk was moved from his usual leadoff spot to the cleanup slot in the lineup and more than answered the call. The Las Vegas native was 4-for-6 with two runs scored in the series finale win.
Fedde, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., earned his second win of the season, working his fourth quality start of the year in UNLV's 11-0 win over TCU in the series finale in Fort Worth on Sunday. Fedde scattered three hits over 7.0 innings of work, tying a career-high for strikeouts with seven along the way.
After loading the bases with a walk, hit batter and base hit, Fedde worked out of the jam in the bottom of the first, freezing Brett Johnson on a called third strike and getting Jerrick Suiter to line out to third to end the inning. Fedde would not allow more than one hit in a single inning and kept the Horned Frog hitters at bay throughout his seven innings, retiring the final 11 batters he faced on the day.
The Rebels were a 21-6 winner Tuesday night at Southern Utah and will open a three-game series with San Diego State starting Thursday, April 5 at 6:05 p.m. from Wilson Stadium.
