April 8, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State catcher Jake Romanski and teammate Michael Cederoth have earned Mountain West Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, for games played from April 1-7, 2013. It is the first MW recognition for both players.
Romanski, a senior from Corona, Calif., hit .474 (9-of-19) as the Aztecs went 4-1 for the week, including a series sweep against Nevada in MW play. Romanski hit a combined 4-of-8 as the Aztecs split a mid-week series against UC Riverside. In Monday's 10-2 win, Romanski drove in the first two runs of the game, while an RBI single in the eighth in Tuesday's 6-3 loss, gave SDSU a 3-1 lead.
Romanski was 5-of-11 from the plate in the series sweep of Nevada. After going hitless in Friday's 2-0 shutout, his RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Aztecs a 5-4 victory on Saturday over the Wolf Pack. In Sunday's 8-1 win, Romanski had a pair of hits with the second being a solo home run, his first of the season and his first as an Aztec.
For the week, Romanski scored three runs, drove in five runs, hit a double and a home run. He walked once and had one sacrifice bunt. Defensively from behind the plate, Romanski was errorless with 45 putouts and eight assists.
Cederoth, a sophomore right-hander from San Diego, Calif., struck out a career-high 14 batters through eight innings in a 2-0 win over Nevada on Friday. He recorded at least one strikeout in each inning, including three in the eighth. Cederoth scattered four hits and only walked one hitter.
San Diego State returns to action Tuesday evening (April 9) with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Long Beach State. The Aztecs will resume conference play with a three-game series at Air Force this weekend beginning on Friday, April 12, at 3:00 p.m. (MT) at Falcon Field.
