Mountain West Announces Baseball Co-Players and Co-Pitchers of the Week - April 9, 2012

April 9, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State outfielder/catcher Chris Wilson and New Mexico third baseman D.J. Peterson have been named Mountain West Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Air Force's Evan Abrecht and New Mexico's Austin House have earned Mountain West Baseball Co-Pitchers of the Week honors for games played from April 2-8, 2012.

Peterson, a sophomore from Gilbert, Ariz., hit .474 (9 of 19) for the week as the Lobos went 2-2, including UNM's fifth consecutive series win. In Tuesday's 7-5 loss at New Mexico State, Peterson was 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored. During UNM's 19-0 and 17-2 wins over Air Force, he reached base 10 consecutive times on seven hits and three walks. Peterson was 4-for-5 with four runs scored, five RBI, two doubles and two home runs in the series opener. It was the second game of his career with four extra-base hits and his second game this season with at least four hits. In the 17-2 game, Peterson went 3-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI and a double, his fourth of the week. In the 1-0 loss to the Falcons in the series finale, he was 1-for-4.

Wilson, a senior from San Diego, Calif., led the Aztecs to a 3-1 week, including a sweep of UNLV for the first time since 2001 to move into a tie for second place in the MW standings. Wilson had a rough start to the week without a hit against No. 14 Cal State Fullerton in a 7-1 loss. He rebounded by batting .500 (7-for-14) in the three-game series with UNLV. In the 12-6 series opener, Wilson was 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored, a double, a home run and two walks. His intentional walk in the top of the 11th built some cushion in the Aztecs' lead and led to a 6-3 win in the second game of the series. In the 9-5 series finale, Wilson was 4-for 5 with an SDSU-record tying three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. He was 7-for-18 (.389) for the week.

Abrecht, a senior from Farmington, Ark., led the Falcons to their first win over New Mexico since 2006 on Saturday, snapping a 22-game losing streak to the Lobos. The right-hander tossed four-hit, 1-0 shutout, allowing just one extra-base hit to the top hitting team in the MW. Abrecht faced no more than four batters in an inning, striking out two, walking none and inducing 21 ground ball outs. It was AFA's first 1-0 win since 1998.

House, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., hurled the first complete game of his career with a 19-0 win over Air Force in the series opener on Thursday. House struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed only four hits, only one extra-base hit, by the Falcons.
