Melendez, Bridges Earn Weekly Mountain West Honors
April 15, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico baseball team swept the weekly Mountain West awards Monday as Senior outfielder Josh Melendez and freshman right-handed pitcher Drew Bridges were named MW Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, for games played April 8-14. It is the first career honor for Bridges and the second for Melendez. His other honor came after the first week in 2012 on Feb. 28.
Melendez hit .526 (10-for-19) as the Lobos went 4-1 for the week, including a doubleheader split at then-No. 10 Arkansas on Tuesday and a series sweep against Fresno State in MW play. Melendez went a combined 5-for-9 against the Razorbacks, hitting 3-for-5 in a 3-0 win in game one and 2-for-4 with a run scored in the 4-3 nightcap loss.
Against Fresno State, Melendez was a combined 5-for-10 with four runs scored and two RBI. In Friday's 11-4 win, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple and two runs scored, while hitting 2-for-4 with a walk in Saturday's 14-3 victory. In UNM's 12-run eighth inning, Melendez hit an RBI-double and scored once. Melendez hit his first home run of the season in Sunday's 4-3 series sweeper, a solo shot in the second inning, finishing the game 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch.
For the week, Melendez scored five runs, drove in two runs and hit two doubles, one triple and one home run. He was walked twice and was hit by a pitch once. By hitting in every game last week he extended his current hitting streak to a career-best 15 games.
Bridges was the winning pitcher in UNM's 3-0 victory over then-No. 10 Arkansas in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. He allowed only three hits and one walk in a career-long outing of 5.1 innings. He struck out three batters while getting eight more to ground out.
In his past two starts he is 2-0 with six strikeouts in 10.1 innings. He has allowed only two runs and five hits, all singles and two of which were of the infield variety, while walking only three. The righty came to UNM last fall as a shortstop, but after head coach Ray Birmingham saw how hard he could throw across the diamond, he moved him to the mound.
Halfway through the conference season the Lobos are in first place in the MW with a record of 11-4, one game ahead of San Diego St. After a midweek game against New Mexico St. Wednesday afternoon at Lobo Field, UNM will travel to Nevada to kickoff the second half as it looks to make an NCAA regional for a fourth consecutive season.
