April 15, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore outfielder Greg Allen has been selected as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar for 2013 by Diverse: Issuers in Higher Education magazine. Allen is a business major with a 3.76 cumulative GPA and is one of 12 collegiate baseball players nationwide (all divisions) to receive the honor.

Diverse: Issuers in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color in a wide variety of sports who have made academic and athletic achievement a winning combination.

The award was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.

To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Allen is the Aztecs' starting center fielder who is hitting .282 and leads the team in runs scored, walks and stolen bases. As a freshman he was named a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete and was selected to the conference all-academic team.
