Mitchell Garver Honored Again

April 19, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico catcher Mitchell Garver continues to pile up accolades during his junior season. Having already been named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time this season this past week, he has now be named West Region Player of the Week.

He hit .450 (9 of 20) for the week as the Lobos went 3-2, including a split with No. 21 Arizona State and a MW series win over San Diego State.  Garver was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in the Lobos’ 15-6 win over ASU on Monday night.  In Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the Sun Devils, he was 1-for-4 with a triple and scored the Lobos’ only run.  In the SDSU series (2-1), Garver was a combined 6-for-12 with six RBI, four runs scored, two doubles and a home run.  On Saturday, Garver was 1-for-4 in the 5-1 win in the series opener and followed up in the second game of the day with a 3-for-5 performance in the 11-4 win.  In Sunday’s series finale, a 4-3 loss, Garver was 2-for-3 from the plate and recorded 11 putouts and an assist from his defensive position behind the plate.

He finished the week with seven runs, eight RBIs, three doubles, a triple, a home run, and a stolen base. He slugged .850 on the week and reached base in half his plate appearances (11-22).

"I'm seeing the ball well," he said. "I'm looking for one pitch and when I get my pitch I hopefully won't miss it. I've been working hard on getting on top of the ball and squaring it up and putting it in play."

UNM head coach Ray Birmingham has been impressed with his star catcher's play all season.

"He's going to be a professional catcher someday, I can promise you that," he said.

Garver was also named one of College Baseball 360's Primetime Performers earlier this season for the week of Mar. 19-25, the same week he won his previous MW Player of the Week award.
