VanMeetren Earns Conference Honor
April 22, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV catcher Erik VanMeetren was named the Mountain West Player of the week, the conference office announced earlier today.
It is the first conference honor of VanMeetren's career and the second time a Rebel has earned the honor this season, as fellow catcher Collin Yelich earned the award on April 1.
VanMeetren, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., hit .500 (8-of-16) as the Rebels went 4-0 for the week, including a series sweep against San Diego State in MW play. VanMeetren started the week with a 2-of-4 performance with three walks, one RBI and four runs scored in a 24-11 win at UC Riverside on Tuesday.
Against San Diego State, he was 6-of-12 for the series, including going 2-of-7 with one walk in the Rebels' 17-inning, 9-8 win on Friday. VanMeetren's lone RBI in the game scored the tying run in the ninth and sent the game into extra innings. In Saturday's 4-3 victory, he entered a 2-2 game as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and drove in two go-ahead runs in his only at-bat. On Sunday, he finished 3-of-4, including a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to give UNLV a 4-2 lead. He scored when the next batter singled to give the Rebels an insurance run for the 5-2 final.
For the week, VanMeetren scored six runs, drove in seven and hit two doubles. He was walked four times.
UNLV (27-12, 11-7 MW) will return to action on Wednesday as the Rebels travel to Tempe, Ariz. to face No. 8 Arizona State. The Rebels will continue on to Albuquerque, N.M. for a three-game series against No. 24 New Mexico starting on Friday.
