Hartman Named Pitcher Of The Week
April 23, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Sophomore closer Zack Hartman was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, announced the conference office earlier today.
Hartman, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., enjoyed a great weekend on the mound in three relief appearances for UNLV. He was an instrumental part in the Rebels sweep of Air Force in a crucial MW series that saw the Rebels enter the weekend one game behind the Falcons and finish two games ahead following Sunday's 5-4 win.
For the weekend, Hartman totaled four innings pitched, giving up just one hit and striking out five while not issuing a walk. Hartman entered the eighth inning with runners on first and second and no outs Friday night and retired six straight, including three by strikeout in just 19 pitches to earn his fifth save of the season, preserving the 4-1 lead for UNLV.
In Saturday's 7-6 win, Hartman worked around a leadoff single in the top of the ninth to retire the final three batters in order. His lone strikeout ended the game, picking up his sixth save of the year. With Sunday’s game tied at 4-4 heading into the ninth, Hartman shut down the Air Force side in order, setting up a thrilling bottom of the ninth that saw the Rebels load the bases with no outs before Brandon Bayardi's sacrifice fly to right scored the game winner, sealing UNLV's first sweep of the year.
Earlier in the week, Hartman threw an inning of relief without giving up a hit and striking out two against UC Riverside on Wednesday. For the week, Hartman maintained a 0.00 ERA with seven strikeouts, no walks, one hit allowed, one unearned run, a win and two saves in four appearances.
