TCU's Josh Elander and UNLV's Trevor Kirk Named 2012 Capital One Academic All-District

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU catcher Josh Elander and UNLV outfielder Trevor Kirk have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team. Elander represents District Seven, while Kirk is in District Eight. It is the first Capital One Academic honor for both student-athletes. As first team selections, Elander and Kirk will advance to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.
Elander boasts a 3.42 grade-point average (GPA) as a communications major. He ranks second on the team with a .317 batting average and 29 RBI. Elander leads the squad with six home runs, 11 stolen bases and 28 walks. The junior from Round Rock, Texas, is the only Horned Frog to have played in and started all 42 games this season. Elander is on the Golden Spikes Award and Johnny Bench Award watch lists.
Kirk, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., holds a 3.55 GPA in kinesiology. He leads the Rebels with a .382 batting average, 43 runs scored and two triples. A 41-game starter for UNLV, Kirk ranks second on the squad with 63 hits, four home runs and a .545 slugging percentage.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Nominated student-athletes were then selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
