Melendez Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team
May 3, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico senior outfielder Josh Melendez fully encompases both aspects of the term "student-athlete." On the field he owns a 23-game hitting streak, a .331 average, 12 doubles, and a Mountain West-leading five triples. In the classroom he has 3.76 GPA in chemical engineering. Those facts were enough to get him named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District 7 Team Friday.
In 2012 Melendez was a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete as well as the MVP of the MW Tournament during which he hit .615 (8-for-13) with seven runs, four RBI, two doubles, a triple and a stolen base. He finished the season tied for third in the nation with nine triples and was named to the All-MW First Team.
So far in 2013 he has been as good, if not better, for the first-place Lobos. After a slow start he has been on a tear of late, hitting .407 (35-for-86) and slugging .674 during his hitting streak. He has scored 21 runs during the streak, including at least one in each of the last 12 games.
With his inclusion on the All-District Team Melendez is now eligible for the Academic All-America voting, which starts Tuesday, May 7. He was one of only two MW players to be named to an All-District team, as Brooks Klein of Nevada was named to the District 8 team.
