Nevada's Klein & UNM's Melendez Named 2013 Capital One® Academic All-District

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nevada outfielder Brooks Klein and New Mexico outfielder Josh Melendez have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team. Melendez represents District Seven, while Klein is in District Eight. It is the first Capital One® Academic honor for both student-athletes. As first-team selections, Klein and Melendez will advance to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.

Klein boasts a 3.90 grade-point average (GPA) as a community health services major. He ranks second on the team with a .339 batting average, six home runs and 37 RBI in 2013. Klein leads Nevada with 57 hits, 11 doubles and four triples, 11 stolen bases and 28 walks. The senior from Blue Diamond, Nev., is the only Wolf Pack player to have played in all 44 games this season.

Melendez, a senior from Chandler, Ariz., holds a 3.76 GPA in chemical engineering. He leads the Lobos with five triples and is second in stolen bases (11) and sacrifice flies (5) this season. A 44-game starter for New Mexico, he is batting .331 on 56 hits with 12 doubles, three home runs, 31 RBI and 33 runs scored.

The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Nominated student-athletes were then voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America in their respective districts.
