Garver, Wolff Named MW Player and Pitcher of the Week
May 6, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico seniors Mitch Garver and Sam Wolff were named the Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 29-May 5. It is the second MW weekly honor for Garver this season and the sixth of his career. For Wolff, this is his first MW honor.
Garver, an Albuquerque native out of LaCueva HS, went 11-for-19 (.571) as the Lobos went 3-1 on the week. He was 2-of-4 with one RBI, one double and one walk in UNM's mid-week, 12-8 road loss to Texas Tech.
In Friday's 11-10, come-from-behind win against Air Force, Garver, the clean-up hitter in the series, was 2-for-4 with one walk, two runs scored and one double. With the Lobos down 10-9, his bunt single in the bottom of the ninth loaded the bases and put runners in scoring position for the following two batters to put the tying and winning runs across the plate. On Saturday, Garver was 3-for-5 with three RBI, one triple and two runs scored as the Lobos won 17-1 to clinch their eighth straight MW series victory.
Sunday's 14-7 win against the Falcons clinched the MW title for UNM. Garver was 4-for-6 with six RBI, two runs scored, one double and two home runs in the Lobos' home finale. It was his second career multi-homer game. For the week he scored six runs and drove in 10. He hit three doubles, one triple and two home runs while being walked twice and hit by a pitch once.
"He is the greatest catcher in Lobo history," UNM head coach Ray Birmingham said.
Garver, who has started a school-record 169 straight games, is now hitting .396 with 18 doubles, 52 RBI, and a .584 slugging percentage, all of which rank second on the team.
Wolff, a native of Rapid City, S.D., teamed up with Garver, his battery mate, Saturday afternoon to lead the Lobos to a 17-1 win over Air Force. In his 12th start of the season he hurled a career-best 7.2 innings and tied his career high with seven strikeouts. He allowed one run on four hits with just one walk. After the Falcons scored their lone run of the game with two outs in the first, Wolff held Air Force scoreless over his final seven innings.
The run in the first against Air Force is the only run he has allowed in his last 21.2 innings, which has lowered his ERA to 3.51. He has allowed only eight extra base hits in 66.2 innings this season and has set a new career high with 48 strikeouts.
UNM now has won seven weekly MW awards this season, which is two more than any other team in the conference.
