Odell Named MW Hitter of the Week
May 7, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU freshman infielder Derek Odell has been named Mountain West Hitter of the Week for his performance in four games last week. The honor is the first of his career and the fifth of the season for the Horned Frogs.
Odell, a freshman from Canyon, Texas, hit .583 (7-of-12) for the week as the Horned Frogs went 3-1 with a non-conference victory over Oklahoma and a 2-1 series win over New Mexico to move into a tie for first place in the MW standings.
In the 4-3 win over Oklahoma, Odell was brought in as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning with TCU trailing, 3-1. His single to lead off the Frogs' half of the inning started their comeback, as he scored a few batters later to pull them within one, 3-2. Odell came up again in the ninth with two outs and the game tied at three with a runner on second base. His second single of the game scored Brance Rivera for the 4-3 win, ending an eight-game losing streak to the Sooners.
In the three-game series against New Mexico, Odell moved into a starting position at second base, hitting .500 (5-of-10). Odell was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the Frogs' 5-3 win on Saturday, a game that was suspended Friday night due to weather. In Saturday's scheduled game, Odell recorded his third outing in a row with multiple hits, collecting two in the 6-5 loss. In Sunday's 2-1 series finale win, Odell recorded one of the two hits that TCU was able to get against UNM pitchers in the game. Odell was perfect in the field, including a season-high seven assists in Saturday's 6-5 loss.
