LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV outfielder Joey Swanner was named the Mountain West Player of the week, the conference office announced earlier today.
It is the first conference honor of Swanner's career and the third time a Rebel has earned the honor this season, as Collin Yelich and Erik VanMeetren were named the MW Player of the Week on April 1 and April 22, respectively.
Swanner, a sophomore from Frisco, Texas, hit .368 (7-of-19) as the Rebels went 4-0 for the week, including a series sweep at Nevada, Reno in MW play. He was 2-of-4 with three runs scored and a double from his lead-off position on May 6 in UNLV's 12-10 over San Diego.
In Friday's 12-2 win against the Wolf Pack, Swanner was 3-of-5 with three doubles, one walk and five RBI. On Saturday, UNLV won 5-1 on only three hits and three walks and he finished 0-of-3 with one walk and one run scored. In Sunday's 15-1 series finale, Swanner was 2-of-7 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
For the week, Swanner scored five runs and drove in seven. Six of his seven hits were doubles and he accumulated four walks. Defensively, he recorded five putouts from his left field territory.
UNLV (34-17, 16-11 MW) will play its final regular season series at Air Force starting on Thursday. After the series with the Falcons, the Rebels will continue on to the Mountain West Tournament in Fresno, Calif. from May 22-26.
