Three Mountain West Catchers Named 2013 Johnny Bench Award Semifinalists

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior Garrett Custons, New Mexico senior Mitch Garver and San Diego State senior Jake Romanski have been named three of the 15 semifinalists for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com today by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. The Johnny Bench Award is given annually to the most deserving Division I catcher that was nominated by his school in a given season.
All three players rank among the top 10 in the Mountain West in several offensive categories. Each is ranked in on-base percentage with Garver fourth at .461, Custons in fifth with .454 and Romanski eighth at .424. Romanski leads the group with 27 walks (tied for seventh), while Custons tops the trio with 21 doubles (second). Garver, a 2012 Johnny Bench Award finalist, leads the league and ranks fifth in the nation with 84 hits.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2013. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013.
